alarm clocks
he got the idea after he watched a king kong movie on tv.
king kong spent a lot of time destroying all of the electric power grids in new york city.
if all of the new yorkers in the movie had battery operated alarm clocks none of them would have been late for work the next morning.
he always worried about being late for work.
he went out and purchased four battery operated alarm clocks in case his electric power grid ever went down.

at the moment he faced a bigger concern.
she just got into bed with him and she intended to stay the whole night.
when she leaned in close to kiss him he couldn’t stop shaking because he liked her too much.
she smiled and whispered they could just watch tv.
the king kong movie was on again.
that tv station must have been featuring it all week.
all the buildings king kong climbed or destroyed resembled the empire state building.
they must have had a limited budget and used the same miniature building model for all the skyscraper scenes.
she shut the tv off and wished “she could stay with him like this forever.”
in the dark he asked her what time should he set one of his alarm clocks so she won’t be late for work.
she said “she didn’t know and besides it didn’t matter.”
he stared at the ceiling and wondered what type of person didn’t care if they were late for work.
he scanned the room one last time to make sure the alarm indicators on each clock were lit up.
he drifted off to sleep.

he dreamed he was the flight captain of a commercial jet airliner and she was his co-pilot.
their plane was heading straight into the empire state building and the controls were jammed.
he asked her for the code to unlock the controls.
she filed her her nails and he asked her again.
she said “she didn’t know and besides it didn’t matter.”
he stared at the empire state building out of the window of the jet airliner and
wondered what type of person didn’t care if they crashed into a building.
he looked at her.
she smiled and whispered “you know we could be together forever if you take a chance and fly into that building.”

he woke up confused and wondered what she meant by “together forever.”
maybe she meant if they crashed into the empire state building and died they’d spend the rest of their time in heaven together.
that was a really romantic thing to say.
except he wasn’t one hundred percent sure about the existence of heaven and hell.
if heaven didn’t exist he’d be dying for nothing.

he stared at the ceiling and knew eventually he’d have to take a chance on something.
